Reality of Waiting Lists

I asked a colleague if student waiting lists are viable in today’s world. Are they real? So he told me of a recent experience.

My friend runs a successful summer program for American musicians in Europe. Last year, for the first time, he delegated administrative tasks to an affiliate group only to discover that in the eleventh hour the program was undersold. He tapped the waiting list and learned that most applicants quickly moved on. But, luck was on his side and he filled remaining spots.

Waiting lists result from supply and demand dynamic. In the context of private music lessons, years ago there were fewer neighborhood teachers serving a larger student demand. Today, however, between ever increasing supply of university music graduates and non-degreed musicians, many more private music teachers are competing for private music students.

Since the Internet offers people many opportunities to find quality solutions faster, waiting lists could well be a thing of the past.
