A Tribute to an Authentic Musician

Today, at The Curtis Institute of Music, I attended a tribute to my harmony and theory teacher Edward Aldwell, who perished in a car accident. (The Philadelphia Inquirer)

Aldwell joined the Curtis faculty in 1971. Along with Carl Schachter, Ed Aldwell co-authored and published Harmony and Voice Leading, now a standard textbook. Aldwell was also a leading interpreter of Bach which earned him a cult-like following. (Recordings)

Many of his former students flew to Philadelphia today from all over the US to honor this special person. Aldwell wasn’t a mere mortal music theory teacher but a brilliant scholar, a magnificent pianist and a witty man who gave each of us a gift of his musical authenticity.

We will miss him terribly.
